Let's Generalize About Women!

Oh Halloween. We’ve waited for this since the first whiff of our seasonal Pumpkin Spice Latte. Halloween is amazing for many reasons, the main one being (obviously) dressing up. Because let’s be real, we can eat ourselves into chocolate comas and have a tequila blackout any ol’ day of the week. But how often can we do it while ALSO dressed as Hermione Granger?

Probably not that often…

I absolutely love Halloween and everything that comes with it. I plan out costumes weeks in advance, then don’t get my shit together in time to actually wear those costumes, then end up being something kind of lame. But regardless, it’s a time where everyone gets to be something other than themselves. Just for a little bit.

That is why I am especially peeved to see all of the “Two Types of Girls on Halloween” posts that float around like misogynistic ghosts this time of year. These generally have one girl dressed in something sexy and another girl dressed in something silly that doesn’t reveal much (if any) skin.

What ensues is a parade of slut-shaming comments from users all over the world. Men and women chime in on how the silly girls are the ones worth being or being with. The “slutty” girls are deemed worthless, insubstantial, stupid, and are dehumanized simply for putting their bodies out there.

So on this, the one night a year to dress up however you damn well please, we have decided that one girl is better than another girl? And trust me, at one point I have been both so it’s definitely not a “one or the other” situation here.

I’m a Mouse, Duh

What I really wonder is where all of these self-righteous woman haters are on Halloween night. Considering the hordes of women who comment “OMG WE ARE SOOOO THE SECOND GIRL!!!” on these posts, the ratio of conservative to racy costumes seems a bit…off. And where are these men whose standards are so high that they dare not speak to a woman who is wearing a Playboy bunny outfit?

Because I’m not seeing them anywhere, either.

If you want to throw on your best lingerie and a pair of mouse ears, go for it girl (or boy)! I applaud anyone with that confidence. If showcasing your body isn’t really for you, then that’s fine too. Wear something goofy, or scary, or punny, or don't dress up! We have absolutely no business judging people based on how they dress--let alone how they dress in COSTUME.

This constant need of self-validation through tearing others down is a cycle that is getting really old. Nothing about the way you dress makes you a good person, especially if you are using that as emotional leverage over others.

So this Halloween, go out, have fun, be safe, and wildly applaud ALL types of girls.
